Process & Technology Questions

What is powder coating, and how is it different from liquid paint?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process where finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically applied to a metal surface, then cured with heat to form a hard, durable finish. Key differences from liquid paint include:

  • No VOCs: Powder coating contains zero liquid solvents, making it environmentally safer
  • Durability: Powder-coated finishes resist corrosion, UV fading, and chipping far longer than traditional paint (10-15+ years vs. 3-5 years)
  • Consistency: Every part receives uniform coverage—no runs, drips, or thin spots like liquid paint
  • Cost Efficiency: One powder coat application typically equals 2-3 coats of liquid paint
  • Sustainability: 98% powder recapture and reuse (liquid paint cannot be recovered)

In short: Powder coating = superior durability, environmental responsibility, and cost-effectiveness.

What metals can be powder coated?

Most metals can be powder coated, including steel, aluminum, copper & brass, cast iron, and galvanized steel. Certain limitations exist: very thin-gauge metals may warp under the curing heat (typically <16 gauge). Patriot will advise during your consultation if material compatibility is a concern.

Do you coat non-metal materials?

Our specialty is metal. However, some plastic-coated metals and composite substrates can be coated depending on their composition. We recommend consulting before assuming a material cannot be coated. Call (786) 391-0645 for material assessment.

What are mil-spec and AAMA coatings?

Mil-spec (Military Specification) and AAMA (Architectural Aluminum Manufacturers Association) are industry standards for specific applications:

  • Mil-Spec Coatings: Required for aerospace, defense, and government-contracted equipment. Ensures durability, corrosion resistance, and performance under extreme conditions
  • AAMA Coatings: Required for architectural aluminum (building facades, structural components). Ensures aesthetic durability and weather resistance

Do you need them?Architectural projects → Likely AAMA-required. Marine/saltwater environments → Often required. Government/defense contracts → Mil-spec mandatory. We're compliant with all standards.

How do you prepare parts before powder coating?

Pre-treatment is critical. Our process includes:

  • Cleaning & Degreasing: Remove oils, dirt, manufacturing residues
  • Surface Preparation: Sandblasting, media blasting, or chemical stripping (per material/specification)
  • Chemical Pre-treatment: Phosphate or chromate coating to prevent corrosion
  • Drying: Ensure zero moisture before powder application
  • Final Inspection: Verify surface readiness before proceeding

Why it matters:Poor pre-treatment = coating adhesion failure. We don't cut corners.

Capacity & Size Questions

What's the largest part you can powder coat?

45 feet in length, 10 feet in width, 10 feet in height. That's South Florida's largest powder coating oven. In practical terms: Telecommunications towers up to 48 feet, marine dock structures and boat lifts, architectural steel components, industrial equipment frames, and fabricated structural steel are all possible. If your part exceeds 45 feet, we can discuss sectional coating. Contact us for custom solutions.

Can you coat small parts, or do you only handle large projects?

We excel at both.Residential gates & fences get 5-7 day turnaround. Automotive rims get 3-5 day turnaround. We don't sacrifice small jobs for large ones. Our scheduling ensures consistent turnaround across project sizes.

Do you offer batch coating or consolidation?

Yes. If you have multiple smaller parts, we can batch them on a single rack to optimize oven utilization and reduce per-unit cost. Minimum batch size: Typically 50+ lbs of material. Contact us with your specifics.

Cost & Budget Questions

How much does powder coating cost?

Pricing varies by material type, surface area, pre-treatment requirements, powder type, and color complexity. Industry range: $0.75-$3.00 per square foot (typical commercial rates). Patriot's standard rates are competitive within this range.

Example: A 40-foot steel structural piece (150 sq. ft.) with standard epoxy powder = approximately $1,500-$2,500 all-in.

To get an accurate quote: Submit dimensions + material + specification. Same-day quote response guaranteed.

Why do some coaters charge differently?

Legitimate variation depends on oven capacity (affects scheduling efficiency), pre-treatment equipment quality, specialty coatings, location overhead, and reputation/experience. Beware of pricing that seems "too good to be true." Cheap coating often reflects cheap pre-treatment, resulting in adhesion failure or premature corrosion.

Patriot philosophy:Fair pricing for superior quality. We don't cut corners.

Do you offer volume discounts?

Yes. Projects exceeding 500 sq. ft. or high-frequency clients receive tiered pricing. Contact us for volume quote.

Color & Customization Questions

How many colors do you have available?

10,000+ color combinations across standard and specialty finish systems. This includes RAL Colors (standard industrial/architectural palette), Pantone Matches (custom color matching available), Candy Colors (high-gloss, metallic, pearl finishes), Matte/Satin Finishes (textured or smooth options), and Marine-Grade Specialty Colors (UV-resistant, salt-spray tested).

Can you match my exact color?

Yes. We offer Pantone color matching and custom sample matching. Provide color reference (Pantone code, paint chip, or physical sample). We perform lab color matching, you approve a test sample before full production, and we coat your part with confidence. Turnaround: Add 2-3 days for custom color development.

What's the difference between matte, satin, and gloss finishes?

Gloss (Shiny): Reflects light, high visual impact, easiest to clean. Standard choice for automotive, decorative.

Satin (Semi-Sheen): Subtle shine, elegant appearance, hides fingerprints better than gloss. Common for architectural.

Matte (Flat): Zero shine, sophisticated, conceals surface imperfections. Premium aesthetic, slightly less durable.

Recommendation: Matte/satin for architectural; gloss for automotive/decorative. We advise during consultation.

Timeline & Logistics Questions

How long does powder coating take?

Standard turnaround is 5-7 business days from intake to completion. Breakdown: Day 1 - Intake + pre-treatment setup. Days 2-3 - Cleaning, surface prep, chemical treatment. Days 3-4 - Powder application + curing. Day 5 - Final inspection. Days 6-7 - Packaging + delivery coordination.

Rush options: Express 3-4 day service available (subject to capacity). Surcharge applies.

What factors affect turnaround time?

Factors that may extend turnaround:Complex pre-treatment (heavy corrosion, old paint removal), custom color matching (add 2-3 days), mil-spec/AAMA requirements (add additional inspection cycles), high current oven load (we don't sacrifice quality for speed).

Factors that improve turnaround: Batch processing, standard colors, high-capacity projects.

Do you offer rush/express coating?

Yes. 3-4 day turnaround available subject to current oven capacity, reasonable pre-treatment timeline, and no complex custom work. Rush surcharge: 15-25% on project cost. Contact us for availability.

Can you handle projects that need to ship immediately?

Yes. We can coordinate with logistics partners for same-day or next-day shipping. Allow extra day for packaging & coordination.
